The Legend of Daruma: The Ultimate Symbol of Grit 💀🔥
That round, intense little Japanese doll on your feed isn’t just a cool design—it represents a 5th-century monk named Bodhidharma (the founder of Zen) who possessed terrifying willpower.
According to legend, he achieved enlightenment through pure, unadulterated resilience:
👉 No Arms, No Legs: He meditated facing a cave wall for nine straight years. Because he never moved, his limbs literally withered and fell away.
👉 The Unblinking Stare: When he accidentally nodded off during year seven, he was so furious at his own weakness that he cut off his own eyelids so he’d never sleep again. Where they hit the ground, the first green tea plants grew.
This is why traditional Daruma dolls are limbless, wide-eyed, and heavily weighted at the bottom. No matter how many times you knock a Daruma over, it swings right back upright.
It’s the literal embodiment of the Japanese proverb:
“Nana korobi ya oki” — Fall seven times, stand up eight.
How the ritual works:
1️⃣ Buy a Daruma with blank white eyes.
2️⃣ Set a massive goal and paint the left eye to mark your commitment.
3️⃣ Put it where it stares at you daily—a constant reminder that your work is unfinished.

So much to see in this one. This artwork took a lot of time and dedication, but seeing it all come together was worth it. Shoutout to Todd, a client turned friend and an absolute warrior, for trusting me with his vision. Every great transformation begins in struggle.

In Japanese mythology, the koi fish swims upstream against impossible currents.
For years, it fights waterfalls and whirlpools, while countless others give up and drift away.

But one koi — the one that never surrenders — reaches the top of the legendary Dragon’s Gate.
There, the gods reward its perseverance by transforming it into a dragon, the ultimate symbol of power, wisdom, and transcendence.

🐟➡️🐉 The koi becomes what it was always meant to be — not by luck, but by will.

This neotraditional Japanese outer sleeve captures that journey —
the lower arm wrapped in waves and motion, the koi battling the flow,
while the upper arm ascends into clouds and thunder,
the dragon emerging in full glory — fierce, wise, and eternal.
